We started the job using the plans to set out location of new drains. We then used spray paint to mark up all trenches needed. Using shovels we dug new trenches to install drains and using a reciprocating saw we cut the pipes and used glue and primer to glue the pipes and fitting together. The challenges faced would be hard clay and sandstone rock that required Jack hammering in some spots in order to get the correct grade of fall in the pipes.

Precision in Drainage: Residential Stormwater Drain Installation in Wollongong
When it comes to managing stormwater effectively, precision and planning are key. At Robert Watene Plumbing, we recently completed a residential stormwater drain installation in Wollongong, tackling a range of technical challenges while ensuring the system met long-term durability and compliance standards.
This project involved the installation of new 100mm and 90mm stormwater drains to service downpipes, new strip drains, and subsoil drainage behind retaining walls, all of which are critical for preventing floods and structural damage caused by poor surface runoff.

Planning and Site Preparation
Every successful drainage project begins with a clear plan. Our team began by referencing the site’s construction drawings to determine accurate drain locations and fall requirements. We used these plans to mark out the proposed trench paths using high-visibility spray paint.
After the layout was approved, we set to work digging the trenches manually. Given the residential nature of the project and limited access, shovels were the most practical choice for maintaining precision and avoiding damage to nearby structures.
Installation Process and Tools Used
After excavation, we started laying the new 100mm and 90mm PVC stormwater drains. These diameters are commonly utilised in residential applications, balancing effective water flow capacity with ease of handling and installation.
Our team used a reciprocating saw to make precise cuts on the PVC pipes, ensuring clean, square ends for optimal joint sealing. Each joint was then treated with PVC primer and solvent cement to guarantee watertight connections and long-term durability.
The new strip drains were installed to collect surface water efficiently. At the same time, subsoil drainage was placed behind retaining walls to relieve hydrostatic pressure—a common issue in properties built on sloped terrain like parts of Wollongong.

Challenges Faced On-Site
No two plumbing projects are the same, and this site presented several geological hurdles. We encountered hard clay and sandstone rock layers, which made trenching more labour-intensive than expected. To overcome this, our team jackhammered specific sections to achieve the correct grade for stormwater flow. This precision was critical, as an improper fall may result in stagnant water, blockages, or backflow during heavy rain.
Quality Assurance and Final Checks
Before backfilling, we performed thorough checks across all joints and pipe gradients to confirm system integrity. Each drain connection was tested for alignment and secure bonding, and all trenches were compacted carefully after installation to reduce the risk of ground movement.
The result was a strong, fully functional stormwater drain system capable of efficiently directing runoff away from the property. This installation enhanced surface drainage while also protecting the home’s retaining walls and foundations from potential water damage.
Project Takeaways
This Wollongong project demonstrated the importance of:
- Accurate site planning and trench layout.
- Selecting appropriate stormwater drain sizes and materials.
- Addressing geological challenges through adaptable methods.
- Maintaining precise fall gradients for reliable long-term performance.
Our team’s experience and attention to detail ensured that even in difficult soil conditions, the stormwater drain installation was done to the highest professional standards.
