I was called to a property to investigate an overflowing toilet. Upon inspection it was clear the toilet was blocked and that the cause of blockage was close by. I removed the toilet from the floor and found that there was tree roots growing into the drain from the connection on the floor. We pulled a large root out of the pipe. We then used a grinder and cut out old pan connector and installed a new one. Then the toilet was re installed and siliconed back to the floor.

Precise Plumbing Repair for a Root-Damaged Toilet Connection
Plumbing issues often start with small symptoms but can lead to surprising discoveries once investigated. In this case, what seemed like a routine overflowing toilet call turned into a classic example of how unseen root intrusion can disrupt household plumbing.
Our goal was simple: locate the cause quickly, fix it properly, and make sure it wouldn’t happen again.
The Job: A Blockage That Went Deeper Than Expected
The homeowner had reported that their toilet was consistently overflowing, despite attempts to clear it. After confirming the blockage was localised, we removed the toilet from the floor for closer inspection. That’s when we discovered that the real cause was a cluster of tree roots that had grown into the drain connection beneath the toilet.
The roots had pushed their way through the pan connector, restricting water flow and causing repeated overflow. While the blockage was close to the surface, addressing it required careful disassembly and replacement work to restore full function.

Our Approach: Thorough Removal and Long-Term Solution
Once the intrusion was located, we followed a methodical process to ensure a lasting fix:
- Root extraction: We pulled out the invading roots to clear the obstruction.
- Fitting replacement: We cut out the damaged pan connector with a grinder and replaced it with a new, durable fitting.
- Reinstallation: We then reinstalled the toilet securely, sealed it neatly with silicone, and tested to confirm smooth operation.
Through every step of the way, we performed each step with precision, ensuring the system was both functional and protected from future root growth.

The Result: Restored Flow and Peace of Mind
After reinstallation, the toilet flushed perfectly, no leaks, no overflow, and no lingering issues. More importantly, the new connector and seal reinforced the drain against further intrusion.
This job demonstrates how even simple call-outs can uncover hidden damage. With the right inspection and repair process, we’re able to turn a recurring nuisance into a lasting, professional solution.
